DAVAO CITY, Feb. 14 (PNA) — The first leg of the (mountain bike) MTB Junior 20 years and under race will hit the road on Valentine’s Day, Saturday, from Shrine Hills MacArthur Highway and going to Ciriaco Elementary School located at the far north of Shrine Hills here. PhilCycling Davao head Salvador Paholio Jr., also PhilCycling vice-president for Mindanao, said the race will be a four-kilometer individual time trial event where the top 10 Davao City riders will qualify for the championship along with the best riders from all over Mindanao in December. Paholio said cash prizes and points await the first three finishers in the race organized by PhilCycling Davao and sponsored by the Davao City Sports Council Inc. (DCSCI) and Jaltan Food Centrum Magallanes, in coordination with Karancho Davao. The three riders with lowest registered time will receive P1,000, P700 and P500, aside from earning points for the December finals, he said. Paholio said riders who are not yet 21 years old before February 15 and have not competed in the elite category of any Samahang Siklista Kooperatiba ng Dabaw (SSikad)-organized competition are eligible to join in the free-registration race. Participants, however, are required to bring original copies of birth certificates for authentication purposes. Out-of-town riders may also join the race, Paholio added. On the other hand, PhilCycling Davao has lined up a monthly competition starting this month until December to strengthen its campaign of promoting cycling among junior riders.
