VETERAN Merculio “Elmo” Ramos of Road Bike 7-11 Columbia Philippines dominated the third stage of Tour of Vietnam on Friday from Sea Port City to Quang Nai in Ho Chi Minh City.

Ramos, a known veteran in Tour of Luzon, outclassed all Asian cyclists in the middle of 135-kilometer particularly in the last 10-kilometer mark after establishing two hours, 54 minutes and 17 seconds to relegate Vietnamese Nguyen Nam Quc in second place.

After joining the breakaway group in the first 40 kilometers, Ramos sped up to tow eight minutes lead against the chasing Vietnamese group. When he reached the 90-minute mark, Ramos turned unreachable.

“There’s nothing new with Elmo and I’m not surprised that he can do it,” said Integrated Cycling of the Philippines (PhilCycling) President Abraham Tolentino, also the Tagaytay City mayor, who issued UCI licenses to competing cyclists.

“Ramos has the edge and the superb skills to win in any international competitions,” said Tolentino, who is also recognized by the Union Cycliste Internationale and the Asian Cycling Confederation as the legitimate PhilCycling president.

Ramos, who is the first Filipino to wear a yellow jersey during the 2004 Tour De Langkawi, is eyeing to sustain his impressive form in the next six stages despite the rainy weather in Vietnam.

Ramos’ team—the Road Bike 7-11 Columbia Philippines—was also named top finisher of the day during the prestigious cycling event also participated by powerhouse teams from Vietnam, Malaysia, Japan, Korea, Mongolia and Hong Kong.

The event is also part of the Asian cyclists preparation for the upcoming Tour De France—the world most prestige cycling competition.
