My sympathies to the family of Romin Salamante….
He was the winner of the 1978 Perk Speed Tour, a four day race to assault the 40kph barrier. He outclassed Maui Reynante (who recently won the Tour ng Pilipinas) , acknowledged sprinter of those days Manolito Moring, rising star Paquiot Rivas, MOdesto Bonzo and an aging Joe Sumalde…..
Salamante and 28 other cyclists average a speed of 40.5 kph for the 4 day, 405.8 km race.
But individually, he only averaged 39.83 kph for the whole race…

He also led the Philippine team to win the 1975 First Philippine Cycling Championships. winning the individual and the team championship. The race was participated in by 4 other Asian nation. Salamante won 4 stages in a row in the 6 stage race, a rare feat considering he was up against Malaysian, Indonesian, Singaporean and Honkong cyclists. Those were the times when the Filipino cyclists were the top riders in the region…

Surely the Philippine cycling lost another of its former hero.
More sadly, it was not even mentioned in the sports pages of our dailies…

    Dear GorioB,

I am the eldest son of Mang Romin, as he was fondly called by those nearest him..Thank you so much for highlighting just some of the feats my father did…For me, he is the best sportsman! He loves his sports so much and if only people/cyclists knew how sincere he was in trying to uphold and improve Philippine cycling…

Again, my heartful gratitude for the kind words you just shared about my father..God bless him and may he rest in peace
