CEBUANO cycling sensation Luis Miguel “Igi” Maximo is expected to hone his skills even more with the hopes of representing the country in future international competitions after he was selected to participate in the UCI World Cycling Center-Korea Satellite Training Camp next month in South Korea.
Maximo, a student of the Ateneo de Manila University who led the Cebu Multisport Team to gold in the recent Ironman 70.3 in Cebu, was endorsed to join the elite camp by PhilCycling, the country’s governing body of the sport, under president Bambol Tolentino. He will be joined there by national track coach Carlo Jazul.
The 50-day training camp will give the participants the opportunity to undergo a high-level training and education camp to develop their knowledge and skills. The coaching education program will be delivered by Keith Flory and Dr. Chester Hills of World Cycling Center in UCI Switzerland.
“I am willing to go and learn new and advanced cycling programs. I am thankful to Cong. Bambol Tolentino and Dir. Jojo Villa for the opportunity. But I am also a student and I need to seek permission and support from my school especially that I will be absent for 50 days,” said Maximo, a former awardee of the Sportswriters Association of Cebu (SAC) Sports Awards.
Maximo is no rookie when it comes to international exposure as he represented the country in the 2012 Asian Junior Cycling Championships in Malaysia and World Youth Day in Spain with the backing of his former school – PAREF Springdale School.
The biggest cycling distributor in the country, Cebu-based YKK Trading, will be supporting the youngster by providing him with race-ready Ridley frame, Campagnolo groupset, Token wheels, Lazer helmet and eyewear, Santini jerseys, FSA crankset, Vision basebar, Lake shoes, Kenda tires, Fizik saddle, CycleOps trainer, and Challenge tires which will be used in the training camp.

MANILA, Philippines – Breaking the 30-year absence in the Olympic Games is what the unified Philcycling (Philippine Integrated Cycling Federation) leadership will be focusing on this year and early 2012.

To make it in the 2012 Games in London, Philcycling is definitely fielding its best riders in the Asian Cycling Championships February next year and in the World Championships later the same year, according to marketing man Emmet Penson, consultant to Philcycling president, Dr. Philip “Popoy” Juico.

Penson qualified though during Friday’s SCOOP Sa Kamayan weekly session that the focus will only be on BMX events where the Filipino hopefuls have the brightest chances because of the presence of a pair of world-class Fil-Americans Daniel Caluag and Alexis Vergara.

Caluag and Vergara, both recruited by Dr. Juico himself in Los Angeles in California during his talent-search trip to the United States, were actually on the Philippine team lineup in the just-ended SoutheastAsian Games but were not permitted to race due to technicality.

It turned out that the duo were carrying a pair of International Cycling Federation (UCI) licenses each, one issued by the US which they had represented in several world championships and the other by Philcycling.

“We were not able to thresh out the problem in Indonesia during the SEA Games due to time constraints, but we will be fixing everything in the coming days so they can already carry the country’s flag in the Asian Championships and the World Championships,” Philcycling secretary general Manding Bautista assured SCOOP members during the forum, sponsored  by Coca-Cola Export, FILA, TV 5 and UNTV.

To qualify for the standard road and track races, a rider must earn the needed points by participating in world-ranking UCI-sanctioned international competitions.

PHILCYCLING STRONGLY CONDEMNS THE ABOVE PUBLICATION OF MR. MANDING BAUTISTA AS INIMICAL TO THE INTEREST OF THE SPORTS.  IT CONTAINS BLATANT LIES CLAIMING THAT THEY CAUSED THE PARTICIPATION OF BMX RIDERS AS IF THEY SPENT ANY MONEY FOR THE SAID CYCLISTS.  MAYOR ABRAHAM TOLENTINO SPENT FOR THE SAID CYCLISTS AND MR. BAUTISTA IS NOW CLAIMING THAT THEY SPENT SUCH EFFORTS.  WHAT A SHAME.
