BECAUSE of the recent success of Danao City’s hosting of the 2015 Asean MTB Cup last weekend, Integrated Cycling of the Philippines (Philcycling) president Abraham Tolentino thought it best to bid for the hosting of the Asian Mountainbike Championship.

Tolentino, who is also a Tagaytay City congressman, said they are looking to bid for the hosting of the Asian event in either 2017 or 2018 as the 2015 and 2016 events have
already been awarded.

Tolentino was in town to witness the Asean MTB, which was held in Manlayag, Patag in Danao City last weekend.

Tolentino said they came to show the support of the race, which is rated Class 3 by the international governing body, UCI.

“If we can win the bidding, then we would ask the Philippine Sports Commission for support,” he said adding that Danao would be a perfect candidate for the venue because of its world-class tracks and because the City has always given its all out support to the sport.

DANAO CITY, site of several international competitions in the past, will host the 2010 National Open for mountain bike the PhilCycling is staging later this month.

Danao City Councilor Oscar “Boying” Rodriguez Jr., the PhilCycling chairman and a UCI international commissaire for mountain bike, will conduct the races on Feb. 19-20, with the country’s best and promising riders in both cross-country and downhill events expected to compete.

Danao City previously hosted the Asian Championships in 1998 and the Southeast Asian Games mountain bike events in 2005.

“Danao City has maintained its mountain bike courses that suits UCI standards and we expect the competition to be tough and tight,” said Rodriguez.

The road race events—massed start and time trials—will be conducted in Tagaytay City, according to Mayor Abraham “Bambol” Tolentino who heads the PhilCycling.

Track competitions will be held in the same week at Quezon City’s Amoranto Sports Complex.

The PhilCycling, according to Tolentino, is set to start issuing 2010 UCI licenses to qualified riders, officials and commissaries.

The country’s elite riders are expected to face a phalanx of youngsters who are bidding to become members of the national pool.

The technical guide for the open would be available at the federation website https://philcycling.wordpress.com or through Paquito Rivas (09166419770) or Jojo Villa (09204562227).
